New Hunting Moves

One thing that’s always bothered me about our hunting gameplay is that wolves bite and hang onto the elk’s buttocks. That simply isn't accurate. Wolves generally go for the rear legs — which is pretty daring, because that is a dangerous place to be! It’s dangerous for the wolf, and it's difficult for us, because those legs are moving fast, which makes it hard to coordinate all the moving parts so it looks good in the game. So back in 2007 we shied away from that entirely, and instead had the wolf bite onto the relatively stable target of the buttocks.

But we’ve decided to redesign this core gameplay in WQ 3 and Tower Fall. Now, players will be able to bite the elk’s rear ankles and hold on for a few violent seconds, while the elk is trying to kick them off. In fact, players will be able to choose to attack either the left or right rear leg, or the animal’s flank, just behind the front legs. Which means that in multiplayer, you can pile on during the chase, with four wolves attacking the prey simultaneously.

So this will be quite an improvement…but it also makes me appreciate our original decision to keep it simple. We now have multiple lock-on zones (to let players maneuver to their preferred bite spot), and multiple bite targets, and multiple alignment variables to make the bite-hold action look reasonably realistic. (Nothing breaks the suspension of disbelief as having the wolf’s mouth drift away from the elk’s body during the bite-hold action. Or having the wolf flip over when trying to bite the elk’s heel. Or, as you can see above, watching your wolf fold back on itself when all the geometry doesn’t quite work out.)

Why oh why can’t wolves use ranged weapons — so much easier! But we’re getting there, and I think it’ll be worth it.

Good job for the team! 8)

This is gorgeous, never change it xD

Will the throat be an available target area as well?

Add knife-wielding pyromancer wolves. That will solve your problem.

Jokes aside, new (and more realistic) hunting moves sound promising.

I insist, leave it there.

The thought of new hunting moves aside from attacking the buttocks is surely promising!

Wowza! I can't wait to finally see this in the game.
Question: Will this come in the anniversary edition or a free update?

I believe this is a Mule deer.

From the shadow it looks like you modified the running animation; nice!!

This is actually a scaled-up mule deer, standing in until the new elk model is finished.

This (well, the new hunting moves, not the glitch) will be in the Anniversary Edition as well as Tower Fall.

Wow, that sounds promising! Loving the new run animation as well, looks very smooth. :)

Maybe floppy wolf can join floppy moose in the compound one day.

Wow, hunting moose is gonna be impossible judging from how much whimpering we heard! This looks like it's gonna be really cool,
and I'm excited for the new elk model.

I love absolutely everything about this video so much, I must have watched it a good thirty times by now.

I adore the new running animation. The wolf looks fantastic. I was also somewhat bothered by the way the wolf attacked the elk in a hunt. While I have seen wolves attack the buttock before, that's not usually until the "pile on" moment where four to five wolves are able to dog pile the prey at the end of a hunt. I am so excited to see the end product of this!! :D

Wow, the animation is so smooth and beautiful! Legit, at first, I didn't notice that the wolf's head was all wonky, haha. That fur effect is looking amazing. So fuzzy!
