well you dont have to put it on autoplay(time goes even faster that way) but you have to be careful, cuz time will sneak up on you and you may not make it to food or water.

have you tried pressing alt and f12 at the same time. makes time really fly. put the game on autoplay and watch the world go by

I've completed it before, and I also go left. If is a looooooooooong way away. And if you get there the prey is usually glitchy. So the best way to do it is get to the glitchy prey area, save the game, open it back up, then everything should be fine.
