Black Flag was excellent; granted, I had my qualms with various parts of the game, but I had a fun time getting that platinum despite certain trophies that were temporarily glitched.

Speaking of trophies, I was playing Syndicate during the holiday outage, and alas, two of my trophies (I'm 99%) sure are glitched beyond repair. I'll have to swap out my old save with a new one and play to get those trophies again. Oh well-- glad I stopped playing when I did.

Last year, I was just finishing up Unity when the numbskulls attacked PSN. I was really lucky that those last few trophies didn't glitch. (They were a pain to get. Not as bad as AC3 trophies, but still, a pain. Once you get that far, it would be a nightmare to have to get those trophies again. I'd feel the same way about AC4.)

Apparently, it's 65% present-day and 35% past. I'm a little apprehensive of the ratio; after Ubisoft's game studios have irreparably destroyed the present-day storyline in more ways than one, I doubt the present-day storyline will have room to be stellar. The premise for the present-day storyline, from my impressions of the trailer, seems to be under circumstances similar to Desmond Miles before AC3. (The present-day storyline for games since AC3 has dramatically changed, and seems to be in limbo from game to game, though in AC4 I'd argue it was strong). I'd like to be proven wrong, but who knows. Perhaps a movie is what the present-day storyline needs.

So I've been having an urge to pick up and play an Assassin's Creed title, but the trouble is, there are so many out at this point that I have no idea which one to pick. I have played the first one and the majority of II, and have only seen glimpses of the other games aside from that. I've asked my brother who has played up to Revelations and has played Black Flag, who said he still found II the most fun and might be worth (re)playing after all those years, but that Black Flag is also very nice. Any thoughts on this? Or is one of the newer games a better choice?

I think I care mostly about the overall setting of the game; this is something I really enjoyed in the first title. I love exploration in general, but do prefer less modern settings with not as much technology and the like. Well-developed characters are a big plus too; the story surrounding them doesn't bother me as much. Finally, I do like being able to be stealthy, but I'm assuming they kept that element around in most if not all of their games.

I see Black Flag and Brotherhood are the most popular ones on Steam. Right now, I'm leaning most towards Black Flag. I'm probably going to wait until a sale swings around regardless, but I'm curious as to which games anyone here finds to be the best ones.

(side note- uPlay scares me. :<)

If you care about the present day story line at all, you need to play through Brotherhood, Revelations, AC3 (<< super important), and Black Flag (also important). The present day storyline since those titles has fallen off the wagon.

If you don't, I personally think Ezio's triology is worth finishing. I enjoyed Brotherhood for its setting but truthfully I did not find the story as compelling (although I did watch the entire walkthrough a year before I played, but it was also what convinced me to buy all the current AC titles). I have a soft spot for Revelations. The plot wasn't stand-out, but it was special in its own way. Perhaps it is because it was Ezio's last game. The ending and the soundtrack are the best in the series, though I argue that the soundtrack is behind Syndicate's.

If you don't mind a less traditional assassin setting, Black Flag is more along the lines of what you are looking for. It's still one of the best and most cohesive playing experience I have had out of all the AC titles. Granted, after getting the PS4 and upgrading my PS3 copy so I could finally get into singleplayer, I pretty much had the game down for a platinum in two weeks but had to wait for some of the social trophies. My point being I thoroughly finished the game in a short amount of time, played for hours on end, and was compelled to do so.

I think the present day storyline here is at its best, despite the intended deviation from the previos storyline. Particularly, all the notes and voice recording and pictures you can find as you gain security clearance throughout the story really make it special, but having that background in previous games also adds to that, too. I used to hate the present day storyline, but the latter end of Brotherhood and onward made me more excited to get out of the Animus and see what was going on. AC3 was quite important in this regard. Black Flag did the impossible after AC3 and renewed my interest in the present day storyline. I thought that the plot could be saved. Subsequent titles ruined this, so Black Flag, for its unique present day setting alone, is worth exploring.

As far as the storyline for Edward Kenway goes, its great. You will meet a vibrant cast of pirates that is one of the best and most well-rounded in the series. The assassin cast aside from Kenway is lackluster (though some mystery I am sure is intended with Ah Tabai, and I do like him anyway). Adewale is also a solid character, and the DLC story for him is worth picking up. The Templars are typical jerks, but I find that the pirate cast itself can be more antagonizing to Kenway at times. The plot itself for Black Flag is compelling and quite emotional, and some of the side questlines (like the Templar Hunt/Key questline for Templar armor) are stellar and keep you on your toes. Exploration in Black Flag is another area where this game suceeds. There is so much to do. As someone who played singleplayer all the way to 100%, yes, you will find some island and beach models that are the same as others when you stop off to gather collectibles. Even so, the islands and stops and coves that are indeed carved out and named are all very different, and will sport different animals and different enemies depending on where you are. Ship battles themselves remain exciting, even after playing for so long. Also, legendary ships... give those a try.

The graphics are amazing on PS4 for a title that was cross-gen. For the brief time I had Black Flag on my laptop (just so I could play multiplayer around NAT3 issues at college, which didn't work) the graphics seemed great, as well. Even when I played Black Flag's singleplayer pre-Uncharted 4, I still couldn't get over how pretty everything looked, and how detailed the foliage was, and how well the ocean water looked. I am sure now I might look at the singleplayer graphics differently post-Uncharted 4, but for a huge sandbox-esque game like Black Flag, the graphics are up there. Other players thought the game looked great on PS3, but I disagree; I was so much more impressed with it on PS4. The game was simply too large to be confined to the graphics power of PS3, and the water/general island landscape of the game benefited dramatically from an upgrade.

On the subject of multiplayer, it's worth checking out. I felt like they really tried with this one (as much as I am still salty about them nerfing certain abilities and making it more difficult to play offensivelh in certain game modes). Unfortunately, since there have been no new AC titles with an adversarial and team mode component (and no, Unity's co-op doesn't count), the community surrounding multiplayer has tapered off. I still play multiplayer to this day, but not as frequently and usually every couple of months when I can find a match. Considering I used to play for 2-3 hours every day in early-mid 2014, that's a steep decline. Also, timephase is awesome.

I had to deal with uPlay a lot because of multiplayer. As far as uPlay goes relating to singleplayer, it's not that bad. Granted, the interface might differ on Steam (and if I recall correctly it did). All you really need to do is unlock cool extras with uPlay points.

uPlay became really scary and difficult to navigate/connect to when Unity came along. You'll be fine. uPlay isn't even around in Syndicate, I don't think.

I admittedly never really got into the present-day storyline, but in this case, I'm glad for that... I've heard mostly negative things about AC3, so I don't mind passing on that one.

Interesting... I'm definitely going to check if I can just use my brother's cd (and hopefully DRM-free) versions, and if not, check if I can find a good offer for those.

I think this and your further elaboration pretty much convinced me to play Black Flag when I find the time (and money) to. So nice to read that you played it for 100% too; I love games that make it enjoyable to aim for that completion. Definitely got me curious, and now that I've got a new graphics card I am sure I'll be able to get the game to look fantastic on my computer as well. I've never owned any non-Nintendo console, so can't really judge on the Playstation front, heh.
Koa wrote:On the subject of multiplayer, it's worth checking out.
Never been much one for competitive multiplayer in games such as Assassin's Creed, but you mentioned a team mode, so who knows? Shame about the community, but I guess that is kind of inevitable when new games get released without something to refresh it.

Yeah, I've mostly read things about cloud sync suddenly failing and deleting people's saves, on top of some login bugs that made it impossible for people to play. I've never been too thrilled by uPlay's DRM, and it admittedly did/does play a role in my hesistancy.

Thanks again, though. You've definitely managed to get me more excited about the games, heheh. <3

Oh, yeah uPlay never handled saves for us, I don't think. But when I downloaded Black Flag on my laptop I saw people complaining about the save issue on Steam; they also complained about it on other AC titles, as well. For my Skyrim saves I try to make backups as often as possible and then copy saves to another folder where they are safe. You might need to do this for AC as well, especially if you have heard about save issues.

I just loved Black Flag because of the pirate ships, just sailing around in a ship was the best part IMO. I didn't really pay much attention to the story. I stopped caring about the plot after AC2.

same, pretty much. i have a lot of fun with the AC games but I'm not really looking for anything plot wise anymore honestly.
black flag was an improvement, though. i got super attached to some of the characters, especially Edward. it was such a beautiful game too.
and let's not forget how awesome it was when your crew would sing to you on every voyage

Ubisoft is giving away Assassin's Creed III, for free, this December (should be added on 7.12.'16.).

Does anyone want to talk about Assassin's Creed: Origins? It came out a short while ago and it seems no one has brought it up. xD
