Name the Bird Sounds CHALLENGE!
We added a new bird soundscape in 2.7.2 . As you explore different habitats, times of day, and seasons, you will hear sounds of 26 common Yellowstone birds!
Name the Birds Challenge
See if you can identify the birds you hear. The first person to post a correct guess on this thread will get a shout-out. Be sure to give the full common name (or Latin, if you are fancy). Don’t just say “sparrow” since there are tons of them.
Thanks to SolitaryHowl for getting the list started and inspiring this challenge!
Resources
To get you started, here's a checklist of birds found in Yellowstone: https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/u ... st2014.pdf

Re: Name the Bird Sounds CHALLENGE!
We did not include magpies in the soundscape– although we certainly could have, as they are pretty common in Yellowstone. They are members of the crow, jay and magpie family, but their calls are higher-pitched than typical raven calls. Keep guessing!Dasamidschol wrote:I hear magpines.

No wrens. We almost put a house wren in...SolitaryHowl wrote:Carolina Wren?
But there are some crazy, warbling songbirds with similar energy and enthusiasm.

Re: Name the Bird Sounds CHALLENGE!
Some birds I heard:
1. House Wren
2. White Bre asted Nuthatch
3. Downy Woodpecker
4. Gray Catbird
5. Dark Eyed Junco
6. Black Capped Chickadee
7. American Goldfinch
I have lots of birds in my yard, and I recognized some of the calls. But some I had to delve deep into the internet and ensure the calls matched the ambiance in the background. Oh well, this is what I got!
EDIT: The filter stopped me for the name of the nuthatch, but I hope it is enough info.

YES to dark-eyed junco, mountain chickadee, and a hairy woodpecker (a bit bigger than a downy, similar appearance)Celestial-Howl wrote:Some birds I heard:

In Yellowstone, the red-bre asted nuthatch is what you would hear but it isn't on the list of new birds. We sure thought American goldfinch would be one to include but it turns out to be very rare in Yellowstone (but there are two other finches that you might have heard!) Alas, no catbird (one of my personal backyard favorites) but there are two other thrushes included (one being American robin). No wren...but since people keep hearing that, I am checking to see if it might be tucked in the "dawn chorus" soundscape (a general mash-up of birds heralding in the new day)... I will let you know if I discover any of these birds in that part of the soundscape.

I was going to say Mountain Bluebird, but I couldn't find a decent call to confirm it so I went with Western Bluebird because they sounded very alike.
EDIT: Are there Blue Jays? I think I heard one.
