When Your Wolf Sleeps...

Post by Mwitu » Mon Aug 05, 2019 8:22 am

Has anyone noticed your wolf "dreaming?"
Essentially, when my wolf sleeps it will occasionally start showing the silhouetted images of different animals. I'm guessing it's sort of a preview, in a way, of different things that are coming soon - whether those are other additions to Amethyst Mountain or Slough Creek and Tower Fall.
So far I've seen a beaver, a cougar chasing an ungulate that may be a bighorn sheep, though its head was not visible, a litter of seven pups, two eagles carrying away a wolf (probably a pup), several different silhouetted animals that are in front of a certain waterfall, a road with a huge truck, a road with a carcass on it, bison, and several other things.
This probably happens about ten percent of the time my wolf sleeps.
What other "dreams" have your wolves had? I'm sure they're things we already know are coming but it's a neat effect to have the wolf "dreaming" of future updates, in my opinion.

My wolves have had some dreams too. Most notable was a dream where there were some shots of pups with\without adult wolves. Then something else happened. The pups were surrounded by fire. Then a shot of wolves racing through the blazing forest. And then the dream ended.
You think it's some sort of story?
That's a bit odd, don't you think?

I've noticed that, too. It was a cute touch. My wolf seems to have very peculiar dreams of animals being flown off by ravens, haha.

I've seen some fire pictures as well.
I never thought of it as a story, though that could be likely as well. The only reason I would doubt that would be because a lot of the pictures were of things to come in future updates such as bison and Tower Fall and beavers. Perhaps the fire is another addition. There's a possibility that they might add fires to the game...
Alternatively, it could very well be a story like you said. Perhaps it's a story of the wolf's pup-hood so you still know how your wolf's life worked without the "play as a pup" idea happening.
However, quite a few players like to design their own story for their wolf, so I don't know if that's the case.
It could just be a random story of a random wolf rather than the main character...
There are so many possibilities! :)
I've noticed the birds-carrying-away-animals dream as well. I was wondering if it was a wolf or a wolf pup being carried away by eagles, but it was hard to tell.

I love the wolf dreams :D

I'm curious how the whole sleeping/healing aspect will work in multiplayer whenever that comes out.

I think the dreams with red backgrounds or fire are nightmares. My wolf, Storm often dreams about eagles carrying pups away and cougars chasing deer.
prey:
hare
beaver
mule deer
elk
moose
competitors:
raven
eagle
fox
coyote
wolf
cougar
bear

Here are some of my dreams that I thought were cool enough to take pictures of.
I had one with a yellow-orange background with a waterfall and birds flying in the sky, with moose? antlers in the front.
There was a other one with the same background and birds but with only one moose antler with a raven on it.
Then there was one with a red background and a deer herd around a road.
Another one with the same waterfall background but with two bears "hugging" the sky.
Probably the most disturbing one was one with a fire in the background, and in the foreground a wolf and it's three pups being carried away by eagles.
Dreams are very fun, though !!

I think my wolf had a dream of a bunch of mule deer in a tree one time.

I was wondering how healing and sleeping would work in Multiplayer, too. I suppose we'll soon find out!
That's interesting; those sound like some odd dreams. :) Now I don't know if they're previews or just interesting dreams.
I quite like the effect, though; I don't think I'll ever be truly bored of watching the sky change as my wolf sleeps, but if I do, I have this interesting effect to keep me from really getting bored. :D
On the topic of the weirder dreams my wolf has had, once I saw a deer with squirrels sitting on it (on its back, in its antlers, etc.).

My wolf had a new dream today, and I got some screenshots of it, but I can't figure out how to post the screenshots.
Oh well. :?

The first part of the dream had two bears fighting.
Then one of the bears faded out and the other bear was fighting eagles.
After that there was a beautiful scene of moonlight on a forest.
Then there were three wolves fighting a bear, with a pup sitting there too.
Lastly, there was a one-on-one combat, bear and wolf.
(All of the "photos" were at night in the moonlight)
That's a bit odd, don't you think?

Maybe they are connected, in that case. If almost all of them had bears in them... :)

Yes. That's what is making me think it's some kind of story.
I wonder if the story is about bears or wolves who had some trouble with bears...
My wolf had a dream of the mountain lion chasing the ungulate whose species is unknown again, but this time there was fire in the background.
I've seen more bison, too, and recently saw a picture that was, very definitely, a bighorn sheep. Then I saw one of a hare stampede. I'm a little worried about that; maybe my wolf had a bad experience with some of them once.
I also saw a picture of two or three beavers rather than just that one.

I don't know about you, but I think those fire dreams came from The Burn, the old one at least. Now the Burn has little trees everywhere and doesn't look dead anymore, I noticed my wolf doesn't always dream, but when she does it usually happens before something interesting like when my wolf dreamed the first time I woke up to my first WQ snow, also she dreamed and woke up to bears and coyotes lol. Maybe just coincidence.

My wolf has dreamed about crows, a truck on the highway at dark, wolves sitting near a river (maybe Slough creek), fire, and some other things I can't remember. I don't know, maybe it is a story. But I find it unlikely, since some dreams are pretty crazy and can't be realistic. Maybe there's a simple reason behind it, like just to keep your eyes busy while your wolf sleeps.

Also, I doubt full-blown forest fires will ever be added. A lot of work has to be put in to make a forest fire, like each tree has to be burnt, smog, fire damage, etc. On top of that fires can take a long time to finally die down, and it would be so much stress, not only for the developers but for the players as well (pups!!), believe me.
We have fire effects already seen in 2.7, but they're kinda cheesy (for a good reason) and the tree doesn't have any burnt effects when the fire burns out.
