A wolf's unique howl

Post by Nightwolf293 » Sat May 16, 2009 8:49 am

For some people, a wolf's howl sends chills down their spine. For me, It is a beautiful experience. I have never heard any other animal (besides dogs) howl so beautifully and uniquely. Why do they howl? What do you think about it?

Ive heard that they have different types of howls. Rallying howls. Defensive howls (telling other packs they are there and to stay away. I think there's another but I can't remember it.

Some people think wolves howl at the moon, but that's not true. They often howl around the time of sunrise and sunset, and usually during the winter. That doesn't mean you wont hear them howling at night, but it's not at the moon.

The wolf's howl is lovely. Especially when there's a pack howling together.

It's really a beautiful sound, I wish I could hear it more. As others have pointed out, it's for diffrent reasons. Location, warning, hunting howls (I think)

wolves howl for diffrent reasons, many of which are still unknown to researchers.

Wolves will howl as a pack for reassurance, such as when a pack memeber is reunited. Wolves also howl to communicate where they are over a large territory or to find other wolves. Sometimes wolves howl to make their presence known in an area. Wolves will also respond to recordings, human howls, and according to either Michelle or CL Baileyi, the captive pack in Minnesota also responds to the tornado sirens and ambulances.

Some wolves will howl after a pack member is missing, which can be mistaken for possible mourning when a pack member dies.

There are sevral recording CDS with wolf howls on them, though most zoos and organizations have their own 'wolf howl' tours.

I have a CD from a book called Living with Wolves, and it features the captive Sawtooth packs' howling. I`ll see if I can upload it on youtube or somethin for you guys....

it's pretty interesting that they can respond to a howl by a human! They aren't fooled at all? Oh, by the way, It would be cool if you could upload it. :)

well, to be honest , to me that is also a beautiful experience , i think that howl is some sort of communicating with other packs (like "we are here" and "stay out of this territory" or maybe just plain communication), also i agree wit the post below... for fun... maybe XD

I thought a wolf howled to stay in contact with their pack when they are apart. So they don't feel alone.

I think that when wolves howl they are communicating with eachother and it's pretty cool.

Each howl shows a wolves emotion:
Happiness,
Dominance,
Contacting another wolf/pack,
Warning,
&
Boasting.
