The Yellowstone Super Volcano

Post by cookiekid27 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:28 am

Umm...mods? I heard there is a super volcano under Yellowstone National park. It is the strongest volcano in the world but it has only erupted 3 times in the past 2.1 million years. The last eruption blasted a piller of dust 100,000 feet into the air. A mix of sulpher oxide and water was also propelled into the atmosphere, thus blotting out the sun and causing global cooling for about, i think, a year or so. The eruption devestated everything within a 50 kilometre radius, as far as the gulf of mexico. This made me really worried when i heard about this because thats where a lot of wolves live. If the volcano erupts it could wipe out Yellowstone. Does anyone have an opinion on this other than me?

i have heard of this, and i feel the same way! we need to move the wolves out of yellowstone, and place them some where else. it may sound cruel, just making them leave the place they grew up in, but its for there own good!

The supervolcano under Yellowstone has been there for a long time, because of the magma chamber (also known as a hot spot) only five miles below the surface. If it erupts, saving the wolves will be a small problem among many. An explosive eruption of such scale could wipe out everything around and many miles outside of the park. Volcanic ash could be blown several hundred miles away, and the planet's climate could change.

That would be the least likely type of eruption. Other eruptions- such as hyrdothermal or types that just produce volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows -would be more likely and somewhat less devastating. Yellowstone isn't due to erupt any time soon, and we would have anywhere from a few months to several years warning. There is no cause for concern that an eruption is imminent.

There are also several other supervolcanoes around the world, and one- Lake Toba, Indonesia -is even larger than Yellowstone. Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone in the 1990's, and it's a good environment for them. Moving wolves and other wildlife out of the park at this time is not very logical.

wolves have survived through natural disasters before...and even then many wolves die of the elements. Wildlife have been documentated as providing an early warning system for natural disasters. In fact, people usually look to wildlife for signs of danger.

Whats intresting is that wildlife can recover somewhat quickly from natural and non natural dangers....take Chernobyl for instance. Its still dangerous for human life to occupy the vast area in Russia due to raditation but wildlife such as wolves, wild boar and deer are coming back.

I'm guessing the odds of it happening within my lifetime are slim.

Also, you would probably read about tremurs, and anxiety in the local wildlife long before it errupted. Volcanoes do give off some signals that their going to erupt before they do...though researchers are still studying for patterns and whatnot.

I'm sure the wolves would leave the area, its only the turtle I'm worried about.

If what I've heard about it is true, it's wide-scale human life that will be in danger as well, not just a few wolves who'll get blown to smithereens.

Yeah i recently heard about it too. But i really dont think that it will erupt any time soon. maybe in like 3 million years but i think that the wolves are safe for now. maybe in the FuTuRe the future people will save them

It's not a matter of moving them out of Yellowstone, it's a matter of making sure that Yellowstone is not the only place in the US that's home to the species. Saying wolves should be taken from Yellowstone is like saying that if a city was near there, it should be evacuated and shut down. It's safer for the people, but it's not as if the volcano erupts every day. ^^"

But you do have a point, there. Perhaps there's a way to predict when it will erupt next? If there is, wolves can be live-trapped and moved a little further away, but then reintroduced when conditions are livable again.

Yes, there is a volcano under Yellowstone. If you have seen the movie 2012, you will actually see all the lava and magma. There will probably be a warning beforehand if it ever does decide to explode.

I think that people who study volcanoes will predict when its going to erupt. And maybe if it did, When the life came back to the area the ash would help growth..?

Bad idea. Period.

Not to be cruel, but I wouldn't be worried about the wolves if that thing erupts...
I would be worried about Canada, my home country, and LA, where I have more relatives. I also have relatives in britain, but face it. A volcanic eruption isn't going to go from america to london :P. I'm not saying I don't care about the people in the USA, because I do. I'm just saying I care about Canada and me and most of my family more. Don't hate. Appreciate

Scientists say that it will not erupt in any of our lifetimes, so we are all fine. If it were to erupt, we either might have moved on and away from there. It may not erupt for another million years. We would defiantly be warned about it because we will probably have greater technology by then, so we can sense it ahead of time.

By the time it erupts, wolves will have spread all over the world, and be reintroduced back into certain parts of the world.

I totally agree...what WOULD happen to the wolves? What would happen to YELLOWSTONE? Would they all die away, never come back? Or would they still be alive? WILL the volcano ever erupt again???
