are there any records of domestic dogs breeding with other wild canid species say, a coyote or ethiopian wolf?

This topic is only about wolf/dog hybridization and does not involve any kind of other wolf/dog/other canid relations. Therefore I doubt I am the right person to answer a question of this caliber.

I do not know of any documented cases of domestic dogs breeding with Ethiopian wolves, but there are records of dogs and wolves interbreeding with coyotes (Coywolves/Coydogs).

Genetically, all dogs are descendants from wolves and derive from them. However, through thousands of years of domestication and training, the wolf part from most dog breeds has literally been bred out of them - there's only a few primitive breeds which have retained the remnants of their wild ancestor's nature (typically Northern breed of dogs and ancient breeds portray wolf-like characteristics, such as being challenging to train, not being as retractable as other breeds, acting suspicious and preserved towards strangers, having a strong prey drive - etc). This does not make them "wolf hybrids", however, because their relativity to thoroughbred wolves is still very irrelevant and distant - dogs can only be categorized as genuine wolfdogs when they share a recent and continuous bloodline/genetic pool with wolves.

In wolfdogs, the wolf is purposefully bred back into them in order to create an "idealistic" animal that combines the retractability of the domestic dog but maintains the appearance of the wolf - but even when wolfdogs have been bred for several decades, breeders have yet failed to succeed in breeding this kind of an animal (being a balanced, stable-tempered domestic canine but looking like an exact replica of the wolf).

Awesome guide Blight! I only have a question:
When you said full-blooded wolf, and then said Canis Lupus (Grey Wolf), does it mean to make a wolfdog it must be dog x grey wolf? Like, there is the Red wolf and Grey Wolf's subspecies.

By "full-blooded wolf" or "pure-blooded wolf", I refer to a wild (or captive) wolf that has no genetic indication of being related to domestic dogs - a real wolf.

Wolfdogs do not have to be matched specifically with the gray wolf - any of its subspecies will also result in the creation of hybrids. Gray wolf and its subspecies (excluding the Eastern Timber Wolf, Canis lupus lycaon) are all full-blooded wolves; a part of the genus Canis, and being C. lupus. If you bred a dog with a red wolf or the Eastern Timber Wolf, you would also introduce coyote (Canis latrans) genes into the bloodline, subsequently creating wolf-dog-coyote hybrids, because both red wolves and Eastern Timber Wolves carry the genetic ancestry mixed with coyote populations.

No problem. I hope my answer clarified some things for you. If you have anything else wolfdog-related to ask, please feel free to do so.

Internet is not always a reliable source no matter what you are looking for. There are tons of misconceptions and false information regarding wolfdogs on the web. If you want reliable sources, please look at the reference list at the bottom of the guide; you will find links to websites that contain accurate data about wolfdogs. You will also find the names of three great books and their authors, which I also used to create the guide.
