Guide to Advanced BBcode

Guide to Advanced BBcode

I have experimented with several BBcode, and HTML codes. If you wish, here is a guide on how to combine BBcodes and use them to your advantage within posts. (without breaking the guidelines)

Colored Italics, Bolds and Underlines

Firstly, pick which one you wish to use. The same tactic works with each of these BBcodes; so you only need one to start with.
Now, click the , or bbcode; it should look like this

Italics
http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/14/50/74/39/bbcode11.jpg

Bold
http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/14/50/74/39/bbcode10.jpg

Underline
http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/14/50/74/39/bbcode12.jpg

Now that you've done that, select the color you wish to post with. Make sure your mouse clicker is inside the underline,bold or italics bbcode, whichever you chose to use, and click the color bbcode that you want to use. After that's done; it should look something like this: [note that you don't have to use the color shown, any color will work]

http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/14/50/74/39/bbcode13.jpg

Now that you've done that, type in the text that you want and first, preview it. It will show up with a Colored version of whatever BBcode you've chosen. Once you've gotten it how you like, you can press submit if you want.
Note: when underlining Colored text, the actual underline is white not color but the words will be colored. There isn't' a way to fix this, that's just how the bbcode works.

How to use Italics, Underline and Bold with Large Text

The following BBcode, despite how it sounds, is actually rather tricky. It took me a while to find this out, and if done wrong only the Bold/Italic and Underline will show. The text size will be lost.
I recommend only using this for Titles in topics, not in regular posts. It's only to keep things well balanced and organized.This doesn't work with colors, I have tried and it doesn't come out. Sorry!

Okay, so first click on the code you want to use; it should start of relatively same as when doing the Colored ones. Now, once you've chosen the code you want; click the size text you want. (the code must be inside the italic, bold or underline bbcode in order for it to work.)

It should look like this:
http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/14/50/74/39/bbcode14.jpg

Now, type in what you want. And click preview to check it out first, once you've done your post (again recommended when making a topic, not post) press submit.

Extended BBcode Guide

Post by Neamara » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:27 pm

Just an update to include most of the new, custom BBcodes added in January 2015... as well as some of the default BBcodes that were installed with the software, but were disabled and rendered useless in the past or have not yet been covered in much detail. Better late than never. ^^
Most of these codes are compatible with other BBcodes, though you'll need to tweak the code for changes to appear correctly. Please refer to Zethra's post above for the relevant information on how this is done.

Predefined BBCodes

Images

Images can now be used in posts provided you are a member of the Image Tags usergroup or any other compatible usergroup(s). Otherwise, you will only be able to view images posted by others and you will not be able to post them yourself.
Usage: Image
Example:

Code: Select all

[img]http://example.com/images/picture.jpg[/img]

URLs

Rather than the old method of highlighting then copy-pasting a link due to its absence, this feature makes it very easy to go to a link with nothing more than a click.
Usage: Linked text, http://wolfquest.org, Formatted linked text
Example:

Code: Select all

[url=http://wolfquest.org]Linked text[/url], [url]http://wolfquest.org[/url], [url=http://wolfquest.org][color=#f90]Formatted linked text[/color][/url]
Note: "[bbcode]" alludes to color or other such codes that change formatting.

Llst

Can be used with the bullet code to create a bulleted list. May also be used to indent text without the bullet code.
Usage:
  • Without bullets. (No longer works as of phpBB 3.1.X.)
  • With bullets.
Examples:

Code: Select all

[list]Type your text here.[/list]
[list][*]Type your text here.[/list]

Ordered List

Like list, except the user may define which bullets are used.
Usage:
  1. Numbered list.
  1. Alphabetical list.
  1. Roman numerals
Example:

Code: Select all

[list=1|a|i]Type your text here.[/list]
Note: A or I may be capitalized for uppercase listing. Similarly, it can be rendered in lowercase if the A or I is not capitalized.

Custom BBCodes

Anchor & Go to

These BBcodes only work as a pair; they do not work separately. These codes grant users the option of inserting a goto table of contents and using anchors as "jump-to" points to take readers to specific sections of your topic. Useful for threads with long posts.

Examples: This is active on the Forum Guidelines and the Bumping, Bookmarks and Subscriptions guide if you'd like to see them in action.
Usage: http://i.imgur.com/vnc5Dax.png

Blink

Applies a slow, rhythmic blink effect. Useful for posts and signatures!

Example: [blink]Type your text here.[/blink]
Usage:

Code: Select all

[blink]Type your text here.[/blink]

Font Face

As the name would correctly imply, this BBcode allows you to use a different font style if Trebuchet MS and Verdana aren't to your liking. If you wish to have your font coloured, make sure to input [color][font]; inputting [font][color] will not work! This also applies to size. You will need to know the name of the font you wish to use, too; if a name is unrecognised, the code will default your text to Times New Roman. This BBcode is not case-sensitive. As long as the font is installed on your computer, it will display.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[font=Lucida Console]Type your text here.[/font]

Float
Image
Allows you to align text and media left or right, complete with text/media wrap. Variables allow for right and left alignment only. As you can see, text wraps around the image and will continue to do so. Media may conflict and obstruct quote and code boxes, though it should not cause too many problems as long as the image is relatively small! This code is not recommended for signature use. The alignment codes are a better alternative.

Example:
Usage:

Code: Select all

[float=right|left]Text or media goes here.[/float]

Glow

Adds a css text shadow which may be coloured to create a weak glow effect or used to create a shadow. Can be used in conjunction with coloured text.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[glow=#0000ff]Type your text here.[/glow]

Highlight

Applies a solid background colour to text. Can be used in conjunction with coloured text.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[highlight=#0000ff]Type your text here.[/highlight]

Horizontal Line Break

Places a horizontal line or thematic break in the post for any desired formatting purposes. While it is a fairly faint line, rest assured that it is there. ^^
There is no text input for this code.

Example:
Usage:

Code: Select all

[hr][/hr]

Left

Text and media are aligned to the left side of the post.

Example:
Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[left]Type your text here.[/left]

Right

Text and media are aligned to the right side of the post.

Example:
Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[right]Type your text here.[/right]

Center

Text and media are aligned to the middle of the post.

Example:
Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[center]Type your text here.[/center]

Superscript

Text is raised slightly, with a small decrease in size. This code adjusts accordingly with the font BBcode. Alternatively, use the old [super][/super] code.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[sup]Type your text here.[/sup]

Subscript

Text is lowered slightly, with a small decrease in size.This code adjusts according with the font BBcode.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[sub]Type your text here.[/sub]

Marquee

Input scrolls endlessly to in one direction or slides until it halts on one side of the post. Direction is not fixed, therefore users may specify up, down, left or right, however speed has a predefined value. [scroll][/scroll] is an alternative code which only supports endless scrolling, not sliding.

Examples: This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll left and loop.
This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll right and loop.
This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll up and loop.
This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll down and loop.
This is sliding marquee. It will slide from the left side of the page and stop until the tab is refreshed.
This is sliding marquee. It will slide from the right side of the page and stop until the tab is refreshed.
This is sliding marquee. It will slide (or peek) upwards and stop until the tab is refreshed.
This is sliding marquee. It will slide (or peek) downwards and stop until the tab is refreshed.
This is alternating marquee. It will continuously bounce from left to right.
This is alternating marquee. It will continuously bounce from right to left.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[marquee=scroll|left]This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll left and loop.[/marquee]
[marquee=scroll|right]This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll right and loop.[/marquee]
[marquee=scroll|up]This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll up and loop.[/marquee]
[marquee=scroll|down]This is scrolling marquee. It will continuously scroll down and loop.[/marquee]
[marquee=slide|left]This is sliding marquee. It will slide from the left side of the page and stop until the tab is refreshed.[/marquee]
[marquee=slide|right]This is sliding marquee. It will slide from the right side of the page and stop until the tab is refreshed.[/marquee]
[marquee=slide|up]This is sliding marquee. It will slide (or peek) upwards and stop until the tab is refreshed.[/marquee]
[marquee=slide|down]This is sliding marquee. It will slide (or peek) downwards and stop until the tab is refreshed.[/marquee]
[marquee=alternate|left]This is alternating marquee. It will continuously bounce from left to right.[/marquee]
[marquee=alternate|right]This is alternating marquee. It will continuously bounce from right to left.[/marquee]

Strikethrough

Draws a line through the text.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[s]Type your text here.[/s]

Spoiler

We used to have two variants of this code: one that allows you to input a title for your spoiler box, and one that is a simple show/hide with no title support. Following the forum upgrade in late 2018, now only one exists.

Examples:
Spoiler:
Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[spoiler]Type your text here.[/spoiler]

Table=

As the name would suggest, create tables with columns and rows with customizable background colours. Example uses two columns and two rows.
Notes: This code works in conjunction with two additional codes. (See usage.)

Examples: Usage:

Code: Select all

[table=300,1][tr][td=50,#000]Title 1[/td]
    [td=50,#000]Title 2[/td][/tr]
  [tr][td=250,#404040]Type your text here.[/td]
    [td=250,#404040]Type your text here.[/td][/tr][/table]

Table

An alternative code without [tr] and [td] input. Example uses three columns and two rows. This version cannot be customized.
Notes: L=<text> indicates a new column. "Title" rows cannot be omitted but they can be left blank. This table does not work well with punctuation.

Examples: [table]L=&Title 1&Title 2 L=Type your text here.&Type your text here.&Type your text here. L=Type your text here.&Type your text here.&Type your text here.[/table]
Usage:

Code: Select all

[table]L=Title 1&Title 2&Title 3 L=Type your text here.&Type your text here.&Type your text here. L=Type your text here.&Type your text here.&Type your text here.[/table]

Reverse

Simple just-for-fun code that reverses text input.

Example: Type your text here.
Usage:

Code: Select all

[reverse]Type your text here.[/reverse]

YouTube

Allows a YouTube player to be embedded in the post. Note that the video uploader must allow embedding in order for on-site playback support.

Example:
Usage:

Code: Select all

[youtube]wQ3R1RbeXLc[/youtube]
This code only requires a specific segment of a video's URL to work, which has been highlighted in gold text: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ3R1RbeXLc[/hide]

BBCodes Requiring Staff Consent

All codes under this section may not be used without first seeking consent from an administrator or moderator. Examples of their coding has not been included, so you will need to private message any active member from either of the named staff roles. The majority of these are trial codes. This list will also include forum-specific/topic-specific restrictions for each individual entry; using any codes outside of the designated forums or topics may warrant a warning and, at worst, permanent termination of the code.

Resize

This code automatically resizes images to a predefined value without requiring the user to do so manually themselves. This code may only be used within the following forums:
  • Pack Central
  • User Writings
  • Wild Canid User Writings
Text-Over-Image

This code allows users to define an image with text overlaying it. This code may only be used within the following forums:
  • Pack Central
  • User Writings
  • Wild Canid User Writings
This code is only permitted within the following topics:
  • General Discussion
