intresting wolf photos

Post by pawnee » Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:35 am

I got these from a book called Wolves of North America. it was made in the 1940`s so the scientific data is not up to date. But notice the black phase version of the red wolf. also notice how the scientific name has been changed....warning the picture below shows some dead wolves trapped by wolf hunters. please focus on the top left picture

and below are wolves used for sledding....supposily people did use them as sled dogs, though the author never mentions how successful the people were with the idea...

Wow, I had no idea that red wolves came in black, too. XD

And I also had no idea that pure wolves were used for sled teams...I've always assumed that sled teams have always used dogs.

Thanks for posting!

They also had pictures of coyotes and wolves, together pulling sleds...I wish the author would have written more about because most books state that wolves don`t like to work in such ways...

the black phase of the red wolf was more popular before their extnction in the wild....I think it was even a sub species at one point.

This is really cool Pawnee!
It is night,
It was supposed to be dark,
But these colours light up the sky,
There is orange,
Like my fur.

Blue,
Like the sea.

Yellow,
Reminds me of my pack.

I am alpha of the Topaz Starlite pack.

agreed very cool and a shame the author didn't provide more info about wolves and sledding. But it kinda makes sense since todays sled dogs, and really the very successful ones are MUTTS! generally wolf, husky, malamute, shepherd, greyhound mixes ... though we have a sled team in our town whose made up of all golden retrievers .. it's sooooooo funny!!

also note that most sledding isnt done for transportation anymore, its just a fun actvity. people can afford to have mixes and non sledding dogs partipate...I`m sure a golden retriver wouldn`t do so great in -60 degree celcius weather....

Wow, Pawnee. Black red wolves? That sounds awesome. Also, I had only thought that dogs were used for sledding, but never wolves. If you ever find out if they were successful in training the wolves to do this, I would love to know!

HAHA NOOO they really don't do well with it.. butit's sooo fun to watch .. it actually akes you do a double take. Yeah I did know it's more for fun but if you actually look back at sledding most of the dogs are not purebred husky's or even malamutes, their mutts and even then alot of those are wolf hybrids. *I'm not saying they didn't use purebred teams, because they most deffinately did.* :?
