Do wolves hunt different animals according to the season?

Post by x-Riley-x » Tue Jan 27, 2009 8:23 am

I don't know if wolves do I mean I know they can hunt like rabbits and such in spring and summer, and there are also elk and deer. But do they hunt different animals because of the season?

i think it depeneds on whats there at the time. so
what they hunt and eat changes by season.

It depends on what is there. Like they wouldn't hunt elk in the fall if the elk already migrated somewhere else. They would hunt what is abundant or sufficiant there.

also even if its not season some animals just may
not live there - its a good thing they eat more than just elk.

It also depends how hungry they are. For example, in summer there may be enough hares and young fawns to feed the wolves without much larger prey. In the winter, however, they are more desperate so will take more risks to get food, like hunting bison.

From all the wolf books I`ve read it seems to follow a pattern...

Wolves hunt large animals in winter, when prey is weakest and hunt animals such as moose, elk, deer, bison.

In the spring, wolves can eatthe young of their prey as well as the animals that are awakening from hibernation.

In summer wolves can also hunt beaver, and to some degree eat some berries and grasses.

Wolves are oppertunistic, so if they see an chance for a meal they`ll take it but they also have to be wise in how they spend their energy. It also depends on the location of the wolf pack, as wolves in certain parts of yellowstone will consume more elk than in other parts.

It also depens where the wolves are. Like in alaska wolves might hunt Musk oxen if they are near stravation or they may kill carribo for there meals.

Actually, wolves kill a variety of prey throughout the year (i.e. they will eat elk/bison throughout the year) and not just in winter. Also, they are not "desparate" for food to go after bison. There are also plenty of large prey available in the spring and summer and wolves, along with other predators, take adult elk and the like. It also has nothing to do with "how hungry" they are in the summer vs. winter. There are alot of articles written about wolves and prey in the journals on line-you might find more specific information there. Also, the IWC has a great section on their website about wolves and prey. I highly recommend it.
