Do wolves hunt bison?

Post by Kipcha28 » Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:44 am

On another thread, we were discussing whether wolves hunt bison. A few people said they didn't, a few said they did. I read a book about Yellowstone's wolves, and I was pretty sure that only one pack has been known to hunt bison.
We, for the most part, are just kids/teens who are going by what we have heard - could an actual expert clarify this for us?

Well I'm not sure if a lone wolf could take on a bison (maybe a lone baby bison) but a pack of wolves can kill a bison, but yes, they do hunt bison.

As far as I know, yes. But not all wolves.

Wolves will hunt anything they can, including bison. But bison are not found everywhere, so only the wolves in an area with bison would be able to hunt them.

It would take an entire pack to bring down a bison; they are very heavy.

Here are some videos of wolves hunting bison:

I know the Mollie's pack in Yellowstone brought down bison, sometimes elk.

Wolves in Wood Buffalo National park reguraly hunt bison. As Songdog said, wolves that live near bison will hunt them, though it seems to be something learned from expirenced wolves teaching younger wolves. I`m sure most wolf packs could but bison are heavy animals and dangerous, so it takes some considerable skill to do so. BBC wolces has a clip of a pack hunting bison in Wood Buffalo national park.

yes they do. but wolves would hunt bison with the other pack members, not just themselves. but they mostly hunt elk. on time we were up in the morning real early in yellowstone and we got in our car and we rode around and we saw wolves hunting a baby bison. the baby bison lost and the wolves got a meal but it was so exciting.

Where bisons are available, yes. But a bison if a tough target to hunt down, even for such master hunters like wolves.

An American Bison usually stands its ground (not moving if there is a hunting wolf pack nearby), thereby increasing its chance for survival. For example, elks make much more easier targets of themselves for wolves because they run, thereby decreasing their chance for survival.

Wolf Country wrote:Wolves predominately prey on hoofed animals including Deer, moose, Bison, Elk, and caribou. Because wolves usually hunt for large animals, (although wolves are opportunistic and will eat smaller prey) they work together to catch their prey. Wolves will eat a healthy, strong animal if they can catch it. (Wolves need an average of three to ten pounds of meat each day).

Wolves will also eat grass to purge their digestive system when they have eaten something that does not agree with them. Food sources may differ and change depending on the season and geographical area, when large prey animals are scarce wolves will prey on mice, Rabbits and squirrels, these smaller prey do not provide a substantial part of the wolf's diet but supplement it when larger prey are scarce...
