you mean are the area around their eye balls black? I guess so unless they were albino. It might have something to do with communication and expressing themselves...also some animals have black under their eyes to help sheild their vision from the sun's glare...eg, like what football players do. I'm not exactly sure though.

Actually it was shown that the black stuff under the eyes really don't help football players =D

Lots of animals have that black stuff, or a variation of it. I read somewhere that wolves have scent glands around their eyes, maybe that's the scent glands?

My dog has the "black paint" stuff around her eyes; I really don't think we need to assume that it does serve some sort of important role. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. I wouldn't call it "paint" either, more like the black skin around the eye, or black tissue.

if anything then maybe communication? why do women and (argubaly some men...) put mascara on? to make their eyes stand out, and wolves communicate through eye contact as well as many other species. Pherhaps its a wolf version of highlighting the eye? that my guess XD

oh i never knew that about football. silly multi million dollar sports players.

The black stuff under the wolves eye is for communication, keeps bugs/flees away from there eyes, to see at night, to keep bright lights from the sun or anything else not to be that bright (almost like sun glasses but not that dark) and to keep there eyes clean ^^ but remember this... not all wolves have that blacks stuff under their eyes

It could also be that the wolf has black skin around it eyes or its entire body. Like the polar bear, it actually has black skin but white hair. This could be the same for the wolf as well.

Are we talking about what some call "Tear Ducts"? I think Pawnee has an interesting point, but If we are talking about Tear Ducts I just think they are there, because they are.

I believe the tear ducts are different, as the black parts goes around the entire eye. The tear ducts are a small part where the eye ends towards the bridge of the nose.

Black under eyes? Reminds me of mascara. =P

Anyway, I believe that it isn't for looks, like most people (including me XD), do. I agree with a -somewhere-above post, where it says it could be used for sunglasses.
Most animals look they way they are because it's supposed to help them adapt to their surroundings, and help them stay alive. Maybe that's what the black under the eye is for, possibly shielding their eyes from the sun or a source of communication between wolves.
