Do wolves HAVE to leave their birth pack?

Post by Alakaru_1 » Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:53 pm

Do wolves around 1-2 years old have to leave and look for a mate no matter what, or can they stay with their birth pack if they wanted to?

No, some wolves usually stay behind to live with their family. Females are usually the ones to disperse, and before males, if I remember correctly.

Wolves disperse around 2-2.5 years of age. Anything before that lowers their chance of survival. A yearling would have a very low survival rate if it dispersed from its pack.
Songdog wrote:In some cases, wolves leave the pack after one year. However, yearling wolves have a much lower chance of survival than wolves of two years. Yearlings have very little hunting experience, and are more likely to die do to starvation, disease, and from territorial disputes with other wolves.

Most wolves leave their packs at around 2 years of age.

like songdog said its the males who usually stay behind, while the dispersal females leave and start a new pack of there own. if a yearling left they would probably not survibe due to the weather, lack of food and all around lack of experience hope this helped :)
