Would a Dispersal Wolf ever return to their pack?

Post by Atropine » Fri Apr 23, 2010 12:22 pm

I'm sorry if this question has already been asked, but I typed it into the search box but nothing came up.

I was wondering, if a Dispersal Wolf was unsuccessful in finding a mate, or was finding it hard to survive, would they ever return to their original pack? And if so, would they be accepted or would they be shunned away by the other wolves?

I am not sure - I looked in my many wolf reference books and could not find anything about that.

I've never heard anything on the subject either.

If I had to guess, I'd say that if they did return (which is unlikely, the parents usually drive out their pups that are old enough to disperse) then the parents would drive them off again, because hunting would be poor for them, too. Without extra mouths to feed the parent's pack would be able to survive longer. Maybe if the wolf had dispersed at one year old (Which is rare, but it happens) it would possibly be accepted again. This is my opinion, I'm just drawing off stuff I already now about wolves. :? Sorry I can't say exactly.

actually if it did try to come back i would think it would be accepted, because they are family sio they might accept them, and they where in the pack before then they chose to leave, so i think they would be accepted but i don't know.

I don't think that would happen anyway. But if it did,I'm sure they would be rejected and would not be able to return again.

The nature and extent of dispersal in wolves appears related to wolf density and prey availability (Schullery, 1996). The natural competition between individual wolves, often over breeding status or resources, may result in one wolf leaving the pack. If there is a shortage of food in the pack's territory, low prey density, a wolf may decide to leave the pack and travel to other territories in search of food. A subordinate wolf may choose to leave the pack in search of another pack in which it would have better breeding status. If a wandering wolf does not join a new pack, it may return to its natal pack and assist in raising the pups.
