Can Wolves Smell in Rain?

Post by Coats » Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:38 pm

I was just wondering if rain could affect a wolf's sense of smell. I'm sure it obscures scent trails and stuff, but does it really affect their sense of smell?

Yes, rain can obscure and weaken scent trails of prey items and other wolves/animals, but it does not effect a wolf's ability to smell.

Adding on to this post a little, it is a common misconception that rain will completely wipe away a scent. Same goes for streams; they don't obscure a scent trail that much, because the scent particles also hang around in the air. But no, wolves can still smell in the rain.

I'm aware of that. I was referring to the imprint of the scent's trail on the ground. The pheromones of the scent lingers in the air but when the ground has been swept by rain, for example, the pheromones begin to "fade" and dim away gradually. Same thing happens to a scent if it's several days old; it's imprint is not as strong or as clear.

Wolves have a superb sense of smell, though, they can still track down a mobile herd of deer, etc, even if all they had was a few days' old scent track. The imprint of the scent grows fainter but it does not disappear until a significant period of time.

Thank you, all, for anwsering my question. I was wondering about the scent trails, so I probably should have been more specific about my question. Even so, it has been answered, thank you. Requesting lock.
