Would wolves eat a beached whale carcass?

Post by Atropine » Sat Oct 16, 2010 4:31 pm

A bit of a weird question, yes. :') This was just prying on my mind.

I was wondering whether wolves would eat a beached whale. I researched this on the internet, however there was only one source and I'm uncertain of the reliability of it. Would the wolves not view it as a source of food, or would it they just take up the opportunity of the meal?

Hello Atropine,
There is a topic about Rainforest wolves. They eat fish, mollusks and probably beached whales. ^^

They most likely would eat a beached whale carcass, if it was left alone by humans and other predators. Really, at least in North America, it seems that the only places wolves live that are coastal are in Canada and Alaska. On the tundra, polar bears would likely claim the carcass first, preventing wolves from approaching. The wolves will really eat any dead meat that they can find, if they're hungry enough.

I think it would depend on the status of where the wolf prefers to live. Like, maybe a pack of wolves lived in an area currently scarce with prey and stumbled upon the beached whale. Perhaps they would decide to eat it, though the salty scent of the carcass may cause them to be cautious. But in my opinion, if prey was lively and very easy to find, the wolves might ignore such a strange looking and salt scented thing. I hope I helped  and feel free to ask me any wolf questions :P I know alot about them because I researched them alot xD

Wolves are opportunists. That is, they eat whatever they come across because they are unsure if they will eat again for a long time. Especially if a beached whale carcass was around, and if no other 'major' predators were feeding on it, I don't see why they wouldn't eat it.

Of course, they couldn't eat the carcass in one sitting because generally whales are huge.
