It's just superstition. Kind of a dumb one, at that.

It's like saying that somebody talking on the phone while looking at a wall is actually talking to the wall.

It's no different then thinking that touching a toad gives you warts or that crocodiles cry because they're sad for killing their game. Superstitions and beliefs people once thought, and still do think, are true. If nothing else they make up for interesting concept stories.

wolves and coyotes just get excited when they howl and throw back their heads, and because wolves are usually active at night it looks like their howling at the moon or stars. Wolves also howl sitting and lying down too. people also thought that solar eclipses meant that supernatraul wolves were chasing the sun away, this was more popular belief in northern european mythology, like in norway or russia...

Well I dont think wolves pecificly howl at the moon. They howl anywhere any time but they are awake mostly at night so people say they howl at the moon. Or if you ask me I think they are thanking God for everything they have :D

It's just another superstition. Just like people think that black cats crossing your path is bad luck, people think wolves howl at the moon. Neither of those above mentioned superstitions are necessarily true.

They don't howl at the moon.

They howl to each other, other packs to stay away from their territory, if one wolf gets lost, they howl so they can find him. Or after a hunt, or just to plain out howl for the fun of it.

When u think that wolves howl at the moon, consider this: When u look at the sun, in say, California, some one in New York, looks at the same sun. The moon is the same thing, the moon isn't intentionally around when wolves howl. Just b/c u hear a wold howl, and the moon is out, does not mean that it is howling at the moon.

Something 2 think about...
