Diseases

Post by WolvesAndSpiders » Sun Oct 14, 2012 10:36 am

Hey there, just at a curiousity, what diseases can wolves contract? Which ones are fatal or not? If there is an existing topic similar to this one please provide a link to it.
Thanks.

wolf.org wrote:{...} Diseases such as mange, canine parvovirus and distemper can be killers both in small and recovering populations and in some established populations as well. Evidence suggests, however, that large wolf populations build up a resistance to canine parvovirus. {Wolves are generally fine when it comes to diseases and can avoid mass contimination, as the infected animal vacants the pack} Lyme disease also infects wolves, and heartworm can reduce a wolf's endurance by restricting blood flow to the lungs. {...}

The diseases wolves can contract depend upon their location, their environment, diet, etc. For example, wolves in Yellowstone generally have not contracted rabies nor canine brucellosis (bacterial disease), although the bison in Yellowstone have struggled with it.
Here's a study regarding the diseases Yellowstone's wolves were found to contract :

There's been a few threads about wolves and what diseases they can get, so I'll link you to one which has a good amount of information as well. No need to re-post it all here. :)
