Zebra Mussels--General Discussion, Your Opinion?

The zebra mussel is an invasive species that was brought to America on the side of ships. It soon spread over many lakes and ponds, clogging drainpipes and taking food from other small organisms. However, it provided food for larger ones, and sometimes boosted water ecosystems. What are your thoughts on the zebra mussel, and do you think conditions are better now that they are here or they got worse when they arrived?

Well, I think they made things better. If they clog drainpipes, I wouldn't care too much about that. Humans can handle cleaning them. If the take away the smaller organisms, that could be bad, but other animals could eat them, and they would help an ecosystem by taking the place of smaller things. And, as weird as this sounds, I think they are adorable... for a mussle...

It might be a good idea to put a poll here to vote for whether you like or dislike them too. It would be easier to tell how much people like or dislike them easier. It sounds fun to look at, lol.

Ha, good idea! Thanks, Koroda. And I think your opinion is interesting. I'm not really sure where I stand on it!

But they ARE invasive, and they ARE damaging the natural ecosystems. Sure, we can clean it up. But who pays for it? The workers? Heck no. WE do. Honestly, that comment was pretty selfish in my opinion.

The zebra mussel is wreaking havoc on the ecosystems, they are damaging the food chain very badly. As a matter of fact, they are so bad to the environment they were our go to species when discussing ecosystems, invasive species, causes for extinction, etc.

I haven't heard too much about this, but from what I just looked up they seem to only cause harm, both for local ecosystems and local communities. They are considered invasive for a reason, and they did not evolve along with the native organisms. They are filling niches that other natives should be filling. This is just asking for trouble. =/
