I strongly agree with everyone saying it should be a separate setting from difficulty level. I can see myself playing both ways, sometimes with the security of knowing they won't die and sometimes leaving it up in the air, but to have to choose a certain difficulty to set it one way or the other isn't my favorite idea. I tend to play my games on low difficulty levels and would still like the choice without having to put myself through the stress of Bring It On. Having a separate option would help anyone like me play the game to their exact liking. x)

    • Personally, I don't want my mate to die!
I like having them as a partner and companion for in game and appreciate the help in the chase of an elk.
Also, I'm very choosy with my mates so I wouldn't want them to die and I have to look super hard for a specific coat color.

Hehe! Me too! I have to find the best color. I always choose a black wolf if I'm black. And yes, suppose in a pack, an alpha dies, but then there's a new alpha, and he kills the female alpha's pups. Soooo... Dave, are you going to add in those consequences about new mates? :|

I don't believe new breeding males will kill the pups if they are welcomed to a new pack. That's seen with big cats and bears, I haven't heard of any instances of a wolf doing that. In any case, wolves rarely take new members into the pack asides from when their mate dies and they require a new breeding partner.

I've seen a lot of people mentioning having a separate toggle rather than just difficulty, and I'm definitely growing more attached to that idea. It would add another level of customizability to the story, for sure, and that's always something I'm all for.
That said, I'm not sure what all would have to go into the coding for it, heh.

Regarding a toggle option, would it be feasible to have only one option that you can turn on and off where your mate is affected by the difficulty level? It does tie the mate's condition to difficulty level but on an optional level so that there are not multiple, separate toggles for varying conditions (e.g. death).

I personally think having a toggle for the mate to die or not would be the best option. I think it would make everyone happy since you would be able to turn the option on or off at any time. In real life, if a mate were to die, then that wolf would have to go and search for another mate. I think it would bring another form of gameplay to have your mate die off and force you to go look for a new partner to continue your family line. It would be cool if you could use your howl to call to other wolves to come towards you or be more present in your world. It would also be interesting if your howl would attract rival wolves as well.

So, I think a toggle would be the top option for this subject. :raven:

I personally prefer B, since it will be more challenging and exciting, also more realistic too! But I also don't mind D too. I can't wait for WQ 3!

This does bring to mind the idea for a ‘kid-friendly’ button where it automatically sets all the things that make gameplay easier (if there’s ever any toggle for gore or maybe even death in the future, for example, it could be there too). Whatever makes even the stricter parents happy (providing that they don’t mind carcasses and pup death, so perhaps not the strictest) there’s less complaints.

There is a glitch in the current game where the mate dies, but then comes back as a kind of living dead. It shows up on the screen but is no longer responsive and keeps walking in the same line...I call it the walking undead.

But this sounds very neat. As for that question...well given how if the player wolf dies and that is game over, I think it should be only fair for the mate to have the same restrictions. If it dies then too bad, time to find a replacement...but how would this work? Can you only get a new mate if you have no pups? Will the new mate automatically work with any current pups you have? Will they try killing the pups?

There's a glitch like that? THAT just sounds WEIRD. I have never encountered it, but I have encountered floating up into space in Lost River... LOL

i find all the choices quite interesting, actually! it'd be fun to see there's no
death on 'beginner' mode besides minor/major wounds. (if wounds in WQ 3 are included!) though seeing the
toggle idea also sounds interesting. for those who don't want their mate to die at all depending on difficulty
level, they could just tick the option of having their mate die, off.

i'm also excited to see the different personalities the options for mates pose and see the
new social arena, and possible new interactions? though the option for mate never dying
seems a bit overpowering in my opinion. so i chose the last option.~ :p

I support the toggle idea very much! I have been playing WQ for years, but I'd rather stick to Easy and Challenging levels when playing (this way, I can actually enjoy the game and relax a bit.) However, for realism purposes I'd like for my mate to be able to die without having to play in a higher difficulty level. It seems like the fairest idea, as everyone wins.

(I know this is a thread that’s probably already served it’s perpose, but I can’t help myself)

Assuming pup deaths are considered perminant, despite you being able to bring them back by reloading a previous save, I voted for ‘the mate should always be able to die’ as I enjoy the finality of it in the pups, but I can also rescue them if it was either a glitch, my mate, or a ‘nothing you can do’ situation. (That being when your attacked by two predators at once and your mate is being less then helpful) however, if it is beyond the players control, (even if they reload a save their mate is dead) I agree with the majority that it should be based off difficulty.

I really like the toggle idea tho! Just do that for all the difficulties XD
